Mastering the Masters—with Robin Poteet

For centuries it’s been common practice to copy and learn from the works of master artists. For this eye-opening class, Robin has chosen 6 artists with a wide range of styles — from traditional to contemporary. Each week we’ll study an artist and then complete a small painting based on their style. This is a wonderful way to expand your creative thinking, discover new subjects and master new techniques such as brushwork and color mixing. You’ll gain a sense of what appeals to you most in style and color. Above all, you’ll have 6 weeks of FUN and enlightenment as we learn from a variety of master painters. Watercolor Portrait & Figure: You can do it!—with Robin Poteet

Does the idea of painting a portrait or figure seem intimidating? Could you use a refresher on painting convincing skin tones and shadows? This mini-workshop covers all aspects of portrait/figure painting to help you create more dynamic, expressive work. The sequence of light to shadow, skin tone color choices and color mixing, hair, clothing, backgrounds—we’ll explore this and more! Beginners—Welcome to Watercolor!—with Robin Poteet

Is learning to paint on your bucket list? Watercolor can be explored and enjoyed at any age, so why not see if this sparks a new hobby or passion? This portable and expressive media is ideal for travel journals as well as large, richly detailed paintings.

Your class will be packed with demos, discussions and exercises and over the course of 5 weeks you’ll gain an understanding of materials, washes, color mixing and technique, PLUS, you’ll complete paintings each week. Simple Subjects—Extraordinary Results!—with Robin Poteet

Sometimes the best subjects are right under our nose… a bowl of fruit, a bird perched on a branch, perhaps a favorite pet. Bring photos of simple subjects and Robin will help you turn them into spectacular watercolor paintings! In addition to practicing solid w/c techniques, you’ll explore backgrounds, learn to exaggerate light and shadow, and get a little wild with color. You’ll be able to experiment with a variety of surfaces, including canvas and masa paper and will learn how to varnish and mount your paintings on wood panels for a dramatic, finished look. Use the form at left to contact Robin with questions.
